Our group of resident artists recently undertook a pilot programme devised by the Department of Education. Five of our group visited 10 schools in the Western Cape of South Africa over two weeks. They told the stories, showed tapestries, and worked with the puppets, reaching thousands of children. The largest presentation was to 1,200 children at one enthusiastic school, where our storytellers had to speak through a loudspeaker. Many of the teachers and principals, themselves of Bushman descent, expressed their gratitude to our artists for helping them and their pupils to recover their identity and to take pride in their own culture as Bushmen.
