PARTICIPANTS
All the participants divide their time between making artwork, telling and studying our ancient myth stories, running the Centre and supplying our community with a nutritious meal each day, using vegetables grown in the Centre’s garden.
Most people in the community have been through the Centre, making art as children or adults, participating in workshops that cover social issues, clowning workshops, group projects and festivals, theatre performances or eating at our daily soup kitchen. It is an important part of our community life.
In 2022, a team of researchers asked our permission to test the DNA of all our participants to establish their genetic origins. They all knew that they were of Bushman descent, but it was exciting and affirming for them to see the results, revealing that all were between 40-70% Bushman. Without language, land, or culture to prove their origins, it has been hard for our participants to believe they were anything other than “just coloureds” – people, as they were taught at school, who had no history and no culture.
